Varicose Veins

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are bloated veins located just under the surface of your skin, usually on your legs. They're often easy to see as they look thick and bulging, although they may be less obvious if you're overweight or if there is a lot of swelling.

Varicose veins may be blue, red, or purple, and tend to twist and coil. They might not be much more than a cosmetic problem at first, but as they worsen, they can cause symptoms such as:

  • Itching
  • Fatigue
  • Burning
  • Leg pain
  • Tingling
  • Heaviness
  • Soreness
  • Throbbing
  • Cramping
  • Night cramps
  • Restless legs
  • Swollen legs
  • Discoloration of the skin around the veins

If you don't seek expert treatment for your varicose veins, they can lead to more serious problems like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and contribute to the development of leg ulcers.

Vein disease is a common, chronic condition that anyone can develop regardless of their age, gender, or race. Early treatment and detection of varicose veins are important to optimize the health of your legs.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins are a symptom of venous reflux or chronic venous insufficiency.

The problem begins when the valves in your veins fail to close properly. These valves stop the blood that's flowing back to your heart from going the wrong way, but if the valves aren't working as they should, blood can leak and pool in your veins.

The result is varicose veins and, without attention, they’re likely to get worse. You're more likely to get varicose veins if you have certain risk factors, such as:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Being a smoker
  • Getting little exercise
  • Standing or sitting for long periods
  • Family history of varicose veins and or having had multiple pregnancies

Fortunately, there are several highly effective, minimally invasive treatments available to get rid of your varicose veins.

What treatments are there for varicose veins?

Vein Clinics of Lake County, and Wound Care Center offers a choice of varicose vein treatments, including:

Laser ablation

Laser ablation, or endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), uses laser energy to heat the diseased veins. This safely and effectively causes the veins to collapse, after which your body reroutes the blood that would have used that vein through the remaining, healthy veins.

Radiofrequency ablation

ClosureFast™ Procedure radiofrequency ablation works on similar principles to laser ablation. However, instead of using light energy, ClosureFast™ uses radio wave energy to heat and close the varicose veins.

Chemical sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy uses a chemical called a sclerosant to achieve the same effect as laser or radiofrequency ablation. Treatment can take up to 30 minutes, and you might need several sessions to achieve the best results.

VenaSeal™ Closure System

VenaSeal™ is a medical adhesive your provider uses to close or seal the diseased veins.
